What causes anxiety? Great question. Anxiety is not caused or developed by one thing, but rather a multitude of things. Many factors have a role such as life experiences, physical health and personality.
Anxiety conditions can run in families. However, just because there is a family member or parent that has experienced anxiety disorders or other mental health issues does not necessarily mean you will enviably develop anxiety.
According to research, anxiety is more likely to happen to you if you have certain personality traits. For example, children that are shy, lack self-esteem, want to control things, easily flustered or are perfectionists, can develop anxiety during their childhood, adolescence or as adults.

Physical issues can sometimes appear as anxiety such as an overactive thyroid. It is important to see your healthcare provider to assess whether you may or may not have a medical cause for your anxiety.

For some, anxiety can be a problem on its own, while others experience many anxiety conditions or other mental health issues such as depression, as often times they happen together.
Use of Substances
Many times, people that suffer from anxiety turn to self-medication such as drugs and alcohol to help manage their anxiety. This can easily lead to substance abuse and become addictive, now causing yet another problem. Substance use and alcohol can actually make anxiety conditions worse, especially when the substance begins to wear off. If this is happening to you, it is vitally important to get help.
